The Department of Geodesy and Geoinformation of the Vienna University of Technology belongs to the Faculty for Mathematics and Geoinformation. It conducts research and education in the fields of photogrammetry and remote sensing.
The GEO Department has research groups dealing with photogrammtry and laser scanning, microwave remote sensing, and climate- and environmental remote sensing. One research focus is to use radar satellite technology for monitoring soil moisture and vegetation on a global scale in support to monitoring hydrologic extremes and climate change studies.
The IT infrastructure of the GEO Departmentis closely connected to the EODC Earth Observation Data Centre for Water Resources Monitoring. It allows to store and process Petabyte-scale satellite data sets, including a global archive of Sentinel-1 data. The processing is mostly done with in-house developed sensor-specific software.
